Gus Nweke

Augustus Nweke is a Nigerian-British artist whose practice explores the metaphysical dimensions of the shadow through indigenous Igbo aesthetics, postcolonial thoughts, contemporary painting, and mixed media. Rooted in the visual philosophy of Uli, his work reimagines suppressed cultural knowledge systems to challenge Eurocentric paradigms and expand the scope of African Indigenous visual culture in global contemporary art. He earned a BA in Fine Art and Design and an MA in Fine Art (Painting) from the University of the Arts London. His academic work complements the rigorous research into cultural heritage, visual semiotics, and the metaphysical dimensions of the shadow—a recurring theme in his work. Augustus continues to develop his critical artistic inquiry into visual expression, identity, and ancestral memory. His recent exhibitions include Shadow We Cast (The Koppel Project Station, 2023), The Black History Month Art Exhibition (Manchester and multiple UK airport venues, 2023), Connection (Espacio Gallery, 2022), FLUX (Espacio Gallery, 2022), Emergence (Gemini Gallery, Lagos, 2021), London Grads Now (Saatchi Gallery, 2021), MA Exhibition (South London Gallery, 2021), Unmute (Copeland Gallery, 2021), Voyage (online, Southend, 2020), and solo pop-up exhibitions in Camberwell, London. Augustus has also curated several independent exhibitions and was awarded the CIA Artist of the Year (2021). He received the Outstanding and Best Performing Student Award for Excellence and graduated as Best Student in 2020. He was also selected for the prestigious London Grads Now exhibition at Saatchi Gallery in 2021. With a background that bridges the cultural, academic, and professional realms, Augustus Nweke’s work embodies a commitment to critical reflection and creative restoration—engaging ancestral wisdom to illuminate contemporary narratives.
